  1. go to google translater

  2. i need (stuff)

    = (stuff) ga iru.

    i need (to do something)

= (something) wo shinakere ba naranai.

= (something) wo (verb) nakere ba naranai.

-I need to go shopping tonight, I've run out of food.

=tabemono ga nakunatta kara, konya kaimono wo shinakere ba naranai.

    -I need that car

    =ano kuruma ga iru.

-I need to use you phone to call home

=ie ni denwa suru tame ni anata no denwa wo tsukawanakere ba naranai.

  3. One way to say this is with a construction for "must".

You basically say "Not doing so-and-so would be undesirable", though it translates as "must".

I can't really explain it sufficiently, so here's a link to a page that explains the construction in great detail:

    http://www.guidetojapanese.org/haveto.ht...

Or you can just use the "want to" construction -- taking the stem of the verb and adding たい(tai)

    For example:

    To eat: 食べる (taberu)

The stem of "to eat": 食べ (tabe)

    Want to eat: 食べたい (tabetai)

Or in the case of "I want (noun)", you should use the word 欲しい (hoshii).

    For example:

    "I want that car."

    その車が欲しい(です)。

    sono kuruma ga hoshii (desu).

欲しい is an i-adjective, so it can be conjugated like one:

"I do not want this hamburger"

    このハンバーガーが欲しくない(です)。

    kono hanbaagaa ga hoshitakunai (desu).

When a verb has "tai" on the end of it, it can be conjugated exactly like an i-adjective.

So for example, I don't want to eat is 食べたくない(tabetakunai)

Saying "I need to go shopping" using one of the "must" constructions:

    買い物に行けなくてはだめ(です)。

kaimono ni ikenakute wa dame (desu).

Saying "I want to go shopping:

    買い物に行きたい(です)。

    Kaimono ni ikitai (desu).
