How do you make big hair without it looking like a mess?

Not that I'm trying to look like a scene kid or anything but you know how their hair is really big and shiny at the same time? how do they do that? to get my hair big I'll tease it and use hairspray but it just kind of looks like a rats nest. have any tips let me know thanks!

Tease the under layers of the hair in sections (teasing on the underside of each section) and spray hair on the underside of the teased sections.  Then get your hair into the shape you want it and lightly comb through the top layer of hair so it looks smooth/all going the same direction and you cant see any evidence of the teasing underneath, the spray with a shine hair spray to keep in place.

when you do the teasing, go down & out, not down & in .

Do exactly as Audrey said , but you may also invest in a good backcombing comb. It will have close together jagged teeth and a steel lift comb on the end.
