Question:

How do you make cigarette smoke smells go away?

My husband is a smoker...

Problem is, my parents are coming to visit next weekend. My mom is "allergic" to cigarette smoke and starts coughing uncontrollably anytime that she smells it.

Not to mention, they didn't approve of my marriage in the first place (3 years ago) and they've finally started liking and respecting my husband. Although I don't agree with his cigarette smoking habit, I love him dearly, and I certainly don't want my parents to think less of him.

He doesn't usually smoke in the house, but has before when I am gone to work and he thinks that he can get away with it. :-P

Our doors are open most of the time, and we have hard tile floors and only two rugs. I am going to wash all of the curtains and couch covers and leave the doors and windows open as much as possible, but what else can I do to make sure that there is no cigarette smell?

Just as a note, I don't think that it smells like cigarettes now, but then again, I just might not notice it.

Thanks!

  1. I think that you should use the Febreze for the couches and wash the walls.

  2. Ahh I feel your pain.  Some ideas. . .

    1.  insist that your husband smoke outside 100% of the time, smoke not only lingers in fabric it also makes the walls and other surfaces look dingy (and as a side bonus it might help him quit if he doesn't have the luxury of smoking inside)

    2.  keep the doors and windows open as much as possible to let in fresh air, burn some fresh smelling candles to help break up the smell, running ceiling and floor fans in the rooms will also help circulate the air

    3.  wash small rugs and curtains, vacuum along basboards and vents, dust all surfaces (countertops, tabletops, photos, electronics, etc) so that everything is clean and fresh and doesn't have the smoke smell lingering

    4.  if your paint can handle it, wipe down walls with an antimicrobial cleaner like Mr Clean

    5.  wash all dirty clothes and coats that might have a smoky smell left in them, air out or wash any smelly shoes

    6.  replace your furnace filter and any other air filters you might have in your house

    7.  Febreeze is a nice temporary smell but remember it is covering up a gross smell, not removing it.  The key is removing the smoke smell not covering it up.

  3. It's so hard to get rid of the smell!  I am an ex smoker.. I would do everything you are doing.. I would also maybe burn some candles or scented oil (scented oil works better for me).  They have ones that are specifically made to take away cigarette smoke, but i haven't had much luck with them..

  4. The smell really fades away. If you can wash the fabrics go for it and like you said let the house air out. Spray some smell goods.

  5. put some perfume around the rooms

    hope this helps :-)

  6. Wash everything, including the walls and furniture.  Then quit smoking.

If it stinks and continues to stink.  How can it be good for you?

  7. Calone/Perfume, Bodyspray, gum and breath mints

  8. after u wash the furniture, u shuld probably use a little febreze for fabrics on the furniture.

  9. Dust all the hard surfaces in your home really well because the smoke can settle on them leaving a smell.  Also vacuum really well.  Maybe light some candles while they are there to cover any smell.  And if all else fails then use Febreeze.  Good Luck.

  10. When I first moved into my apartment it smelled like smoke so bad that my coworkers were asking me if I started smoking because my clothes smelled like smoke.  I've been living there for a year now and my clothes still smell some.

    1. You could spray febreeze on the furniture.

    2. Have plug in air fresheners (you can buy them cheaper at Dollar General)

    3. I put baking soda on the carpets for about a day and then vacuumed, but since you don't have carpet you could use it on the rugs.

    4. OH! I know! You could buy one of those ummm.....I don't know what it's called, but you put a tea cup candle in the bottom and above the candle you can put some liquid smelly stuff.  The candle will warm up the liquid and it'll smell the whole house.  My mom got me one at Bath and Body Works at Christmas time.  I have a small one bedroom apartment and if I use too much of the liquid it smells really really strong.

The liquid is called Home Liquid Fragrence Oils.  See the link below for what I'm talking about.

  11. Burn candles that smell like food (fruity smells) and bake cookies and/or breads right before they visit (to eat too!).  Steam clean the rugs, or sprinkle the rugs with arm & hammer rug deoderizer (cleaning isle) and then vacume.  Turn on fans around the house to move air around.  Wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth.

  12. Get some febreeze fabric freshener and spray it on everything.

  13. febreeze has ALWAYS worked for me (my boyfriend and myself both smoke, and i have 5 cats and a dog) hectic, smelly, and that has always worked. oh, and clean your windows with windex. the nicotine sticks to the glass, and makes it smell horrible. oh yeah, and all 8 of us live in a small apartment.

  14. Incense and this new air freshener that makes your smell "neutral" check the grocery store shelves. I think it's called "Oust". I would try incense followed by Oust.

  15. There's a spray called Ozium that works great,  you probably dont notice it :)  try ozium in the air and febreeze on your furniture.
