Question:

How do you make hydrogen sulfide?

Basically I am a little curious on how to make it. I have been told it is rather dangerous to do, will a gas mask prevent toxication? I have seen numerous answers, some saying that by mixing HCl and H2SO4. Basically bath salts and muriatic acid. Others say it just balances out and no reaction occurs. And if it is created is a gas mask really necessary to wear when creating it?

  1. You have been advised with very good advice that this is a poisonous gas. Do not do home experiments even if you can get the raw materials. However, H2S is a gas that is used extensively in laboratory analyses, usually qualitative analysis, so it is necessary that you know how it is made. The reaction is:

    FeS + 2HCl → FeCl2 + H2S.

TREAT THIS INFORMATION WITH RESPECT> DO NOT PLAY WITH DANGEROUS CHEMICAL>.

  2. Hydrogen sulphide is almost as poisonous as Hydrogen Cyanide. (The latter is the gas that was used in gas chambers to  execute murderers.)

If you do not have the knowledge to make it you cannot make it safely!!

Many school districts have banned teachers from making this gas in science classrooms.

Note: Mixing HCl and H2SO4 does not produce H2S!!! Don't play with processes that you do not understand. You could DIE!!
