  1. Put water in a shallw polised metal basin

  2. Watch this video and you'll know more than most about how mirrors are made.

    Enjoy!!

  3. mirrors used in scientific instruments, and particularly in reflecting telescopes, were made of 'speculum metal', an alloy of copper and tin, until about 1856. as very large metal mirrors were liable to distortion with changes of temperature, optical mirrors were next made by depositing silver on the top surface of glass , instead of at the back. unfortunately these readily tarnished and had to be re-polished or re-silvered every six months, a drawback overcome in 1934 by depositing aluminium instead of silver. this was done for the 60-inch and 100-inch telescopes at Mount Wilson, the aluminium being vaporized in a vacuum and re-condensed on the surface of the glass. such mirrors are more reflective of ultra-violet light than silver, and are therefore especially suitable for photographic work. they require attention only once every three years.

for ordinary glass mirrors, the deposition of an extremely thin layer of silver on the back of the glass has replaced the tin amalgam backing.

  4. My father was a painter and decorator when the trade included etching glass and silvering mirrors.

The method hasn't changed since those days and if you are the experimenting kind you can do it at home, firstly you need a supplier of Silver Nitrate which is the base for all mirrors, a wholesaler chemist should help, then follow these instructions:
