  1. Many companies collect used tires from unauthorized dumps or from other sources and they refurbish them in which they sand the old tread off and then glue a new tread on. These are used by truckers because they are cheaper than buying new tires. You will hear some people be talking about retreads and these are what they are referring too. These are also usually the culprits of the pieces of tire and tread you find on highways.

    One of the other many uses for old tires is heating for asphalt companies and other places. The companies that make asphalt need to constantly have a source of fuel and since natural gas and wood are both very expensive, the asphalt companies will but the old tires from a company that will usually grind the tires up and then they will use these to heat the asphalt equipment.
