You shouldn't think about it too much, or worry if what you're doing is right or wrong.  There is no right or wrong in making out...there are no rules.  Don't let your brain get in the way...instead give your passion (which is inherent in everyone) free reign...listen to it...act upon it.  There is no possible way a make-out session can be awkward if passion is in the driver's seat.  Not rocket science!  It's very natural.
