I have 2 parakeets. I have had 1 of them for several months and the other for about a month. I have tryed everything to make them tame and let me handle them but they don't want anything to do with me. I even let there cage door open and they very rarely come out. Any suggestions?

  1. Well, the problem with most parakeets is that they arent hand fed, and its really handfeeding that makes birds tame. Adding the other parakeet did a favor to your first bird ( as parakeets are social animals) but it makes taming them even harder because they have each to bond to rather than you.

Your best bet is to keep their wings clipped and take each one out separately and interact with it in a small room, so that it gets used to being handled, but it will take patience and the reality is that they probably with never be as tame as a handfed bird...(I learned this the hard way)

  2. BE patient with them.. parakeets aren't that smart but they will catch on what you are trying to do

  3. The act of 'handfeeding' will not make a bird tame.  'handfeeding' might even work against you in the long run.

    As to the original question,

I can talk of Tinkerbell, my Congo African Grey Parrot who came out regularly with me to fly in the forests and mountains and parks in Taiwan.

I can also talk of my white rumped shama YingShiong , which was thought to be an 'aviary song bird'. YS was a wild caught bird at 3 years old and came to me at 5 years old. YS is smaller than a budgie, and much much more shy of a type of bird said 'impossible' to train.
