  1. Decide how long you want your tassle to be.  Find a piece of cardboard twice that length.  Wrap yarn around the cardboard for about half thickness you want your tassle to be (you may have to experiment).  Carefully slide the yarn off the cardboard.  Fold in half.  At about an inch from the fold, tightly tie a piece of yarn around the top.  Cut the yarn loops at the bottom.  The result is a tassle; not a pompom but probably the best you can do by hand.

I hope this makes sense...it's easier to show than to tell. :D

    Good luck

  2. I wrap the yarn several times...20-30...around my 4 fingers.  Take a long piece of yarn and tie in the middle, leaving 5-6 inches.  Slide off your fingers, cut the loops, fluff up, and trim as needed.  I make pom-poms for baby hats using this method.  I tie it onto the hat, making several knots, then weave some of the 5-6 extra inches into a few stitches on the inside of the hat.  This ensures it will not fall off.

  3. Here's a pattern for a pom pom:

You'll use the tail ends that you used to knot the pom pom together to attach it to the top of your hat just by tying it on.
