  1. When you have the garment all tied up, just apply different colors to the different areas of white.

The more you do it the more you are able to predict how it will turn out.  At first it is just kind of a mystery, which is half the fun.

I have a friend who uses acrylic paint and the heat "sets" it in the microwave.

  2. The key is to use a cool water dye, such as the dye found in any good tie-dye kit. Don't use Rit dye, because it works best when you boil the fabric in it, which means you can only do one color at a time; also, Rit dye fades quickly and bleeds badly in the laundry. You are much better off with a higher quality dye that works at room temperature. Surprisingly, the better dye often costs less than Rit.

You won't be able to find a good dye at your local grocery store or pharmacy. Go to a crafts store or sewing store, and look for a tie-dye kit made by Jacquard, Dylon, Tulip, or Rainbow Rock. (Avoid the tie-dye kits made by Rit and the Magic Strings tie-dye kits, because they contain poor dye.) Or, you can mail-order over a hundred different colors of Procion MX dye from a good dye supplier such as PRO Chemical & Dye in Massachusetts or Dharma Trading Company in California. Use it with soda ash to set the dye. Follow the instructions included with the kit, or see the links below.
