Question:

How do you manage to budget, save money and learn how to no to people when they ask for it?

I struggle with this issue a lot. For example I live with my mom and I pay her 200 dollars for rent, then I pay my phone bill which is 80 to 85 dollars a month. After that there's food that I buy for myself, eating out, and whatever is left I might go to walmart or buy something nice for myself and the baby(she lives with her grandmother). Also my income is limited. Any suggestions?

  1. People ask to borrow money, you just say no. They'll gripe or whatever, but by experience I know that it takes only seconds for you to get money out of your pocket to "lend it", but when you dare ask for it to be returned (after a day, a week, a month) the same person will always have an excuse to say that he (or she) can't return it  at the moment because of this or that problem and then YOU get so tired of having to ask that simply drop it and never see your cash again. So when they ask, just say NO.

  2. When they ask....you say "no" then turn on your heels and walk away. You have to "WOMAN UP"

  3. Rent is a must, but your phone bill is way to high. Instead of eating out put that money into savings.  Instead of wasting the extra at Walmart, put it toward improving your education or work skills so in the future you can warrant a larger salary and provide a great way of living for you and your child.

  4. For starters, don't keep cash on you. Use a bank account. It's easier to say yes to lending money when you have cash. Keep track of what you are spending & keep your receipts. Make yourself a budget list and stick to it. I would look for a cheaper phone company to go through (unless this includes your internet and cable). As far as eating out goes, you don't really need to eat out. I'm not saying don't eat out. Maybe cut it back to once or twice a month. Don't buy an extra stuff for yourself or baby unless it's needed. I know we all need clothes and stuff, but we don't need something new every month. Babys need it more often as they grow. Also if you buy baby stuff even when they don't need it, then as they get older they expect to get stuff when they want it, without realizing that we sometimes can't afford it. Since you seem to be so limited in funds maybe you should start looking into courses and training programs that are funded or have funding available to people so that they can take their courses. That way you'll be able to better yourself and eventually make it so that you are not so limited with your funds. Also I would suggest trying to find a free self help assertiveness course. It will help you with people wanting to borrow money and it will also help you get ahead other aspects of life.

I know this isn't easy to do and it does take time but if you stick to it. It will work. In the long run you'll be happier.

    Hope this helps some.

  5. First, never loan anyone money no matter what.  There are loan companies available in every city across America for anyone who needs them.  You are not a loan company.  Even if someone has no food, you can direct them to a nearby church for assistance.  Never loan anyone money..ever.   What I did to save money was for two years I canceled my cable tv, home phone service, Internet, and took my lunch to work for 2 years.  It doesn't sound like much but that saved me approximately $2,400 which I used to pay off my credit card balance.  I moved into an old house in a rural part of town, my mortgage is only $421.00 a month.  All of my friends (all of them) have mortgages over $1,000 a month and they are broke all the time.  Instead of central air, I purchased two energy star rated window units and I only cool the rooms I'm in 99% of the time instead of the whole house.  That lowered my electric bill from $119 a month down to just $46.00 a month.  To make a long story short, I now put $1,000 a month into a savings account each and every month, and I invest 6% of my income in a monthly 401K at my job.  I have no credit card debt, just my house payment each month.  It is nice saving for retirement and also having money on hand if I need it.  Too many people try to "keep up with their neighbors" and they are going broke doing it.  Hope this helps.

  6. You have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T. What kind of cutbacks can you make? For example: I drink bottled water. Now at $1 a bottle on something that covers over 65% of our planet is not smart. So I bought one of those water filters that s***w into your faucet. I have bottles that I refil over and over again. I take them to work. Do you have a lot of small appliances around that house that are always on? I cut my electronic bill almost in half by unplugging all the clock radios and night lights. I also bought some of those florescent bulbs that look a lot like a regular bulb. These things use 80% less electricity than regular bulbs. You would be surprised, but these small things add up. I know I was spending money on the water filter and energy efficient bulbs but these things will pay for themselves in a month providing they pertain to you. If you really need the money right away start cutting back on your food costs. Romain noodles cost a dime and they taste just as good as campbells chicken noodle that costs $130 a can. Ok no chicken in romain noodles, but you are probably just missing about 4 tiny pieces of chicken. Put a brick inside your toilet 'chamber'. You will use a little lesser water each time you flush..Before you know it you will be ahead. Wanna be creative? Find yourself leaving lights on? Buy a motion sensor switch, the lights will turn on when you enter the room and will turn off (by a set amount of time) when you leave the room. I have one, they cost $15 at HomeDepot. Need new windshield wipers for your car? Who says you have to buy 2? You only need the new one on the drivers side, leave the old wiper on the passenger side.  So remember you have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T! Yours truly seahorsehawrey.

  7. Tough question.  Don't let people exploit you.  You need to save to be comfortable for when you're not living with your mom anymore.

There are small things you can always do, like buy in bulk, make personalized gifts instead of buying a costly one, etc.  Plus, one of my favorite sites for buying things online is www.retailmenot.com.
