  2. Screen sizes are measured diagonally.

    One point of info though. Old analog TVs have a 4:3 aspect ratio (width to height). Most new digital TVs are widescreen format, with a 16:9 ratio, more suited to movie displays.

    To get the same picture height on the 16:9 set as on the 4:3 set, you need to multiply the 4:3 set's diagonal size by 1.22 .

    Thus, if you have a old 32 inch CRT, your new flat panel should be at least 39 inches diagonal. Otherwise, a display of a 4:3 show will actually be smaller on the new set.
