How do you measure a window for replacement ?

To make sure you get the right size ?, and is the replacement something a handy homeowner can do ?.

First of all, yes if you have some basic skills you should be able to replace a window no problem.  The easiest way I've found to measure is to take off the inside trim and measure the rough opening that the window sits in.  This is how the windows are sold.  I just replaced 3 windows in my house this summer and it went pretty good.  remember to seal around the windows with a good grade of window and door caulking.  Hope this helps and good luck with your project.

You can get the right size by measureing the length and a the width. A homeowner can do it as long as you are educated somewhat in installing windowa its not something that you want to jump into

Hi. The major home improvement stores all have a handy booklet that will exactly guide you through this. Of course they also want to sell you the window but once you have the size it is easy to ask around about pricing. The install can usually be accomplished with just a few simple tools. I just did a couple of windows and was really regretting not finding out how to do this sooner. It was so easy and the new windows look and operate great!
