How do you measure the density of a ring??

  1. Firstly calculate mass using a sensitive scale.

    then calculate the volume using a graded container then put in some water and record the volume then put the ring and record the volume the diffrence between them is the volume of the ring.

    ρ = m \ V


  2. You can do it without measuring the volume directly. This is how Archimedes did it.

    Archimedes' principle aids in the experimental determination of density by providing a convenient and accurate method for determining the volume of an irregularly shaped object, like a rock.

    If an object is massed in air and found to have mass m =10 grams

    and is then submerged in water and found to have apparent mass m' = 7  grams then it has displaced m - m' =3 grams of water. Since water has a density of 1 gram/cm3, this implies Volume of object = V = 3 cm3

    The density of the object is then D = m/V =3.33 grams/cm3
