Honestly, I think the best way to motivate people is to set a good example in yourself. It's a very powerful teaching tool and makes a very strong and positive statement.

After that, I would say that plain old-fashioned encouragement works best. Point out a person's attributes and let them know you appreciate them. When they do an outstanding job at something specific, praise them. Show people that they matter in little ways that are unexpected.
