  1. I cut a Plexiglas's and put it over top of the air conditioner and screwed it to the top bracket and around the frame of the window. slid the window up to both and screwed it to that frame. put caulking all around to keep rain out


  2. If the window will open wide enough make a support outside to hold it up so it doesn't have to hang from the window.Then put filler board at top.

For the most part you don't.  A/C's that are meant for vertical, double hung windows are generally too wide to fit in a crank out or slider opening.  You can purchase a special A/C which will fit that size opening, specially made for that application, or you can, if you own the building either install it through the wall yourself or have someone else do it for you.   We put ours through the wall several years ago and it's been great having it there.  It solves the storage problem for the winter months, (we made a cover for the outside) and it's ready to go in the spring or summer, whenever it gets too hot, just by removing the cover and turning it on.
