  1. If you can't stick your keys in and shift freely without the car being started, you have to pop the hood and disconnect the shifter linkage that runs from the firewall (under the windshield) to the transmission. There's (ideally) a cable that runs to a lever on the transmission and it's connected by a cup-and-ball joint with a cotter pin through it.

Get some pliers and remove the cotter pin and grab the lever on the transmission and shift into neutral by hand.

You won't be able to tell which gear you're in, so when the car wants to move freely, you're in neutral! :)

  2. Well, I'm not sure how it works for a 94 volvo, but my 89 honda accord has an "Automatic Shift Release" button next to the gear shift.  I had the same problem with a dead battery, but I just stuck my car key in there and it let me change gears.  Hope that helps.

  3. theres a rectangle looking button next to shifter push it in then pull car into neutral or could hook up jumper cables or replace battery
