I have three piece slate table want to take out the slate and move the table and did not know how long this will take of how difficult it is. Especially when removing the felt. How to remove and re-glue. Not sure of the options, but do know that I prefer to do it my self and not hire it out. I am good and learning these types of things but want to reseach the best method before I start.

  1. when the rails&felt are removed you must take chalk&mark  each piece of slate so you can put them back together exactly the way they came off. when putting back together level the bed first then start putting the slate back on , just  make sure you mark  every thing first.

  2. They showed how on This Old House this season.  It was the Newton Project,  it was on about three weeks ago.  See if you can find a copy.  It was an antique three piece slate.  They disassembled it on one episode and then two episodes  later they reassembled it.

  3. Not to  hard , climb underneath you will see the bolts that  hold the table together, and  find the screws that hold on  the side rails ,

the disassembly is pretty straightforward  leave the legs and  main rails only until the stones are gone .

The felt isnt glues down, shouldn't  be anyway,  the stones are joined with wax and leveled with a straight edge for reassembly .

  4. If you cannot move the table yourself, and you MUST take it apart, firstly, the felt is NOT glued, its stretched. You'll have to have it re-felted by a professional. This is not terribly expensive, they will come to your house.

Secondly, its not very hard to get it apart, but it will still take 3-4 strong healthy young guys to move EACH PIECE of slate (I cannot express strongly enough - this stuff is HEAVY!)

thats about it. Don't kid yourself, think this through - its a HUGE PITA!
