How do you not feel bad when people you work with are demoted?

how can a person just "watch out for yourself" when people you work with are getting less money an hour?

This happened quite often to my wife,when she worked at the Fed-Ex ops center in Fullerton,Ca.(shhh nobodys supposed to know where its located)This was one of their call centers.Her dept. kept getting cut,then her position kept getting cut,or they would change her title,which of course offered lower pay each time.(this was after Fred Smith turned it from a private business to a corporation) and yes it sucked! But since your not the owner or in control,thats all you can do is offer your condolences and either work on or move on.
