Question:

How do you not slip on a box or rail when snowboarding?

Hey, I've been snowboarding for some time, but never really any park style stuff, so my question is about boxes and rails. I've tried hitting them up alot, and I can do them decently. The only problem is, that when i try to spin on the box or off of it, or on a rail or off of it, my board will fly out from under me, leaving my with a busted head or butt bone, lol. Any tips or help??? thanks in advance!

  1. Everyone has those problems when learning rails.

With 50-50s the best advice I can give is look where you want to go, and just assume you are going to nail it.

50-50s are actually pretty easy to do, but they become hard when you get scared and don't commit.  Then you end up bailing off the side or slamming down on your butt or face.

With backside boardslides (going forward), I think about leaning forward a little bit, which counters my natural instinct to lean back, making me centered.  You also have to keep your front edge up a little, so you don't catch up.  And like anything else in snowboarding, you got to commit and go into it with confindence.

With frontside boardslides (going backwards), I think about leaning backwards a little to counter my natural instinct to lean forward, making me centered.  With frontside boardslides you have to keep your backedge up a little bit to keep from catching up.  You need to look over your shoulder at where you want to go.  Again, you got to commit and go into it confidently.

Also, you have to keep your knees bent.

  2. The biggest tip I can give is just to look at the end of the box (or next curve if its a curved one) and always keep your board flat with the box/rail (most of the time this means leaning forward slightly, as your going downhill mostly).

If you feel yourself losing your balance, lean forward, not back. Leaning forward can help regain the correct momentum, while leaning back into the hill just makes your edges blunt and it really hurts landing backwards on a rail/box.

  3. try widening the stance on your bindings. That will give you more stability.

  4. When you spin on the box your changing your center of gravity outside of the safety zone and thus losing control. Plan your jumps ahead of time and see what you need to do in order to stay stable.  Mostly all about balancing when you switch your board around on the rail or box making sure that your center of gravity stays the same wherever way you choose to slide or turn. Also, don't be afraid of moving forward on the box or rail. (leaning forward)

  5. umm i sometimes have that problem...try keeping your center of gravity lower (keep your knees bent) and just keep practicing!
