How do you obtain disability insurance if you're diagnosed with sleep apnea?

After 20 yrs in the same hospital, I'm leaving my pharmacist job to work as an independent contractor. In preparation for my move, I applied for disability insurance thru a large insurance company but was denied coverage because I was diagnosed with sleep apnea.

Any suggestions out there? Will this continue to haunt me? I had the test done because my wife said I snored too much. Had I never been tested, I'd be on my merry way with a disability policy in hand.

  1. The above answer makes no sense.  Diability insurance has nothing to do w/ CPAP machines or how much they cost.  To the insurance agency you are at increased risk though because of OSA's association with heart disease, HTN and premature death/ disability (ie. theoretical higher risk of falling asleep at the wheel and crashing your car).  You will likely be able to get a plan at a higher premium if you are compliant with you CPAP for about 2 yrs or so.  Until then I think you are out of luck.  I guess if you were able to lose enough weight you may be cured of the OSA but not easy as we all know.
