Question:

How do you order eggs over easy in Japanese?

I had an issue trying to tell a waitress at Jonathan's that I wanted the eggs cooked over easy. It was really embarrassing since she was looking at me like I'm an idiot as I did a poor impersonation of eggs being flipped on a pan. I've tried giving up and just settling with sunny side up but I really miss eggs over easy.

  1. I just want to add a little bit to helloeveryone's answer.

I think you might be a little better off saying something like 両面焼き半熟にしてください。Because if you just say 両面焼き, they might fry your eggs all the way through and the yolks will be hard. If you add the 半熟 part then they will know that you want the yolks (黄身)to be only partially cooked.

Just a suggestion. I prefer sunny-side up or scrambled myself. I've never actually used 両面焼き半熟 before, but I have gotten soft-bolied eggs before in Japan and the 半熟 expression has always worked for me.

  2. Ohayo オニギリガール,

What a sad story! I couldn't read this without tears、but you'll be alright.

    over easy = 両面焼き=Ryoomen yaki

    You can say,

    " Ryoomen yaki onegai shimasu"

    or

    "Ryoomen yaki ni shite kudasai"

  3. There is no popular tradition about turn-over in Japan.

Egg own only is usually cooked to Sunny-side up, Boiled egg, scrambled egg, Omelet. If you really need over easy, you'd better ask Turn Over(Tah-an Oh-bahh) please (or Ryo-men ue mo shita mo yaite kudasai).

Regular coffee shops or restaurants must understand Turn Over very well but I'm not sure if Jonathan's part-timer waitress can understand it or not.

You don't need to be ashamed. Your quick wits such gesture or pantomime are always helpful to communicate with different culture/society from your own one. Try a lot of same things without worry. You soon will know and feel how to be comfortable to live/stay there later.

  4. haha, im sorry for your experience.

the thing is in japan there's really no such variation as 'egg over easy'. people dont diferrentiate if the yoke is raw, well done, or is burnt 'over easy'.

i betcha jonathan's "manual" which the employee or cooker adheres to have no instruction on how to cook that. i can safely say that they wont bother taking your request. there are no 5 star hotel or something. they just serve what's on the menu, s**y girl.
