How do you overcome a mindset problem in basketball?

Every time I just scrimmage with my team, I always do really well. But whenever I play against a team stronger, faster, or just better....I just freeze up. I don't know why, but I just start playing really badly. I can't dribble, I start missing all my shots, making stupid passes, etc.

I train really hard physically....I lift 3 times a week, cardio 4 times, and practicing bball almost everyday. But how do I train myself mentally? Please help!

  1. this used to happen to me whenever we would play against the better people in our class and against other teams..........what you need to do is to stop thinking of these certain people as gods and make it feel as if you're as good as them, that's how i got over games where i had to play certain people..............hope this works.......

  2. I don't have a mindset problem. Shaq does!

So what if he shot over 60% and I shot under 40%?  Pass me the d**n ball!

I'm Peter Pan!  I'm the hero!  Gimme my Finals MVP!

    Think Happy Thoughts!

  3. wear a rubberband on your wrist if you can during the game, or one of those cool baller id bands, and everytime you make a mistake just pull it back. it will get your head together because the pain (as small as it may be) will get you in the right track. keep playing and remember to have fun.

  4. What you need to do is calm yourself and stop thinking about the mistake you made. You need to put that behind you and focus on what is happening now. Once you start to get a hang of it it will just come naturally.

  5. i have the same problem and am trying to overcome it. I am a shy guy so it is hard for me to play with others. just go out and have fun, rememeber that you train so hard because you love the game and that everyone makes mistakes and others dont care if you mess up. listen to music b4 playing, relax, take deep breaths, chew gum if it helps. remember to focus and be in the moment, focus on every shot, pass, or movement.

just have fun and love the game. have confidence and know you can play with those ppl you BELIEVE to be better. In reality you probaly just as good because you work hard. hope this helps. good luck.

  6. When gametime comes, get cocky. Get mean. Get mad. Take everything personally. Push opponents around (until the refs notice). If you're one of your team's best players, have it in your mind to be the best player on the floor. If you're more of a role player, have it in your mind to be better than the player your matched up against.
