  1. Did he also tell you to leave it plugged in while you felt around the inside of the receiver ?

  2. The tech was lying then.  Communications go two ways on satellite systems.  You have a card in the receiver that is linked to your directv account.  Regularly the receiver checks to see if your account is valid, and what channels you have privileges for.  It usually does this in the background as it's downloading the guide.  However, Directv can send a "hit" coded just for your receiver that it receives and updates your channels (to 0 if you're turned off).

Information being broadcast by the satellite is encrypted.  Unless you're authorized you don't have the key to unlock that encryption.

The only way I've seen to pirate Directv is to get a card writer and update the card with a working account number.  But Directv regularly disables those accounts, so it's really annoying to be watching a show, then poof, no TV for a few weeks while you and your buddies get a working key.  Rinse and Repeat.  Not to mention if you get caught you can get actual jail time for it and lots of fines.

It's just not worth it.  Pay for the Satellite service or get an over the air antenna and watch network television for free.

  3. hmm? interesting. might be true
