Basically a Chinese character should fit in a square. Characters consist of various parts called radicals and phonetics, which in turn consist of a number of strokes. There are several kinds of stroke, called horizontal line, vertical line, dot etc. There are rules about the shape and relative length of the strokes and the order in which they should be written. Do a web search for "Chinese character stroke order" or some such and you will find some resources to answer your question.
