How do you paint checkered walls?

i want to know how to paint walls so that they have a checker board design.

  1. The best luck I had was painting the light color over the whole area.  Then tape the pattern on the area.  It is easier, I think, if you use squares to cover up the areas you want to keep light.  Good Luck!  Done right it looks great but it is a lot of work.

If you don't want it to be exact (perfect) you can first paint the 1 color all over then paint every (say 6 inch square) the other color you want the checker board to be.  Freehand it ~ using a fairly small brush (1-2" wide) and you'll paint the checks pretty well (you won't see the flaws from far away).  Remember when you start the second row to paint below and between the color you painted last.

    I've painted checkerboards on many many many pots.  They look great from 6 feet away.  And the checks are only 1/2" x 1/2" and not exactly perfect but they still look great.  Just like a checkerboard.
