i'm trying a new recipe, and the first step is "parboil the rice and drain"

whaat???!!

help! i need to finish making this in 3 hours, and i can't even do the first step!

  1. Parboil the rice means to boil it about 1/2 of the way to done so it is still a bit hard in the center. I assume the recipe has you finish the rice in the oven with other ingredients like a paella or jumbalaya.


  2. Parboil is an incorrect term in your recipe because it refers to partially cooking the rice while they are in the husks. In your case, all you have to do is cook the rice for 5 minutes or so (counting from when it begins to simmer).

    The best way to make rice is in a rice cooker, you will get perfect rice everytime.  On the stovetop, combine rice and water (2 cups water for every 1 cup of rice).  Bring to a gentle boil, cover, reduce and simmer for 10-15 minutes depending on the type of rice and the recipe.  Recipes like rice pudding require longer cooking times.
