  1. 1-Assuming that the hole is in sheetrock cut the sheetrock horizontally back to the center of the studs on each side of the hole

2-Vertically along the center of the studs.

3-Cut a new piece of sheetrock the size of the existing hole and nail into place.

4-Put a coat of sheetrock mud in the seams then tape over it.

  2. Go to Home Depot in the drywall section they have drywall patches in different sizes. They go on very easy and the instructions are on the package. You don't need to put anything else behind it, but you will need a small bucket of drywall mud and a can of spray texture to match the texture you have.

  3. Square off the hole and cut a piece of drywall as close to the measurements of the squared off ceiling hole. Get a couple of pieces of 2x2 wood, any kind will work. The pieces of wood need to be long enough to span the hole with a couple of inches on either side. Put screws through the ceiling drywall into the wood (you are making a nailing surface for the patch). When the wood is secured, place the new piece of drywall up there and secure it to the wood pieces. Then you will need to put joint compound around the edges of the patch, if there are large spaces between the two you may have to use drywall tape. After the joints between the old and new are filled, allow it to dry and if necessary sand or use a damp sponge to feather the edges. Then you may have to texture it, depending on the texture you will have to spray or trowel it on. Couple coats of Kilz, then paint it.
