They may not be able to cash a UK postal order in the US. I think a money order can be bought in other currencies - you pay in pounds for a money order made out in dollars.

A post office usually sells an INTERNATIONAL MONEY ORDER in the currency you desire.  If you want to send money to the US, you pay in local currency, they do the conversion, and give you a money order cashable in the US.  If I want to send a money order to the UK, the US, Japan,, wherever, I go to a Canadian post office, and pay in Canadian dollars, and get a money order in any currency I desire, depending on where I am sending money.  I can also purchase international money orders at any bank or credit union.  We have been sending money orders around the world for many years longer than the internet has existed.

If the postal order is crossed it must be paid into your bank account . If not you can cash it in any post office and buy the US dollars in the post office in a follow on transaction . The Post Office is the largest dealer in foreign currency in the UK  and any High Street Post Office will sell you dollars . If you use " plastic " you require a driving licence or passport .
