Question:

How do you perform a link and sync on a 1986 15 hp evinrude outboard with remote throttle?

Motor runs with low idle speed of about 450 rpm. There doesn't seem to be a way to adjust the idle speed because the remote throttle cable "locks" the throttle ring in place. Others have suggested I try a link and sync and I bought the Seloc book but can't find any procedure with that name.

  1. look in seloc for "synchronization" or "synchronize"

Seloc is ok, but as you know by now it's hit or miss as to whether it'll have an illustration that helps with your particular motor.  Your factory service manual is 100 times better.  Try the evinrude site http://www.shop.evinrude.com also http://www.iboats.com and http://www.marineengine.com both carry 'em.

Idle adjustment is usually on the starboard side of the engine, look for a s***w in a spring-loaded nut.  The idle is adjusted entirely with spark advance...the throttle valves stay closed at idle.

link & sync is the process of synchronizing the carb linkages with each other and with the timing advance.

Sorry I'm not familiar enough with that motor to give you the step by step.

  2. Richard and texas have it, but- I just remembered that the low profile 15 hp had a recall over exhaust port relief holes drilled in the exhaust tube just under the power head.(kind of a big job). If they were not drilled out to a 1/4". they would carbon over and make idle adjustments impossible. Many a real nice 15 hp were sold off cheap after nothing would make them run right.

This is not the first repair- but the last -for a rough bad idle.

  3. First disconnect the cable from the controls.  Start the engine  and let it warm up.  by hand move the throttle until it stops on the idle adj. s***w.  It should be above 500 rpm.  now put it in gear, if it stalls your too low, repeat until the engine continues to run in gear.  Now adjust the control cable until it can be reinstalled without moving the throttle arm.  Good luck!
