I am thinking about getting a dairy calf to show in 4-h next year. What should I look for in deciding which calf would be the better animal? Thanks

  1. First, you have to decide what breed you want, then base your selection off of which calf best fits the breed criteria.  You'll want a balanced animal with a level topline, good legs, correct coloring for the breed, etc.  Judges also like to see an animal that not only has correct conformation and breed characteristics, but is mature and well-muscled....so don't pick the smallest of the group!  Pick your breed, then do some research online for what an "ideal" of that breed is.

  2. Look for a stamp on the beast that says USDA Prime or USDA Choice.
