  1. I have Popsicle sticks with kid's names on them. If they are there, they place it in the "Here" bucket. Anyone who is absent, remains in the "Absent" bucket. I also put a child in charge of recording the attendance because it teaches responsibility and gives them math practice.

  2. I actually have two ways. When students come into class, they must put their chair down to work. So, when I get ready to take attendance, I look to see what chairs are still up. Then I have a backup plan. Students choose for lunch using name tags. So I look at the name tags that are left and at the chairs and see if they match.

  3. We have a large cookie pan outside of our classroom that is divided into 3 sections vertically. The first section has all of the student names on a magnet. This was created by a parent. Essentially it is a flat magnet with a address label of their name stuck on.  In the morning the kids either move their name tag to the second column: hot lunch or the third column: cold lunch.

I have students (1st - 3rd graders) get the attendence and all the tags that haven't moved. They call out the names in front of the class in case someone didn't do their attendance. Then the students who didn't move their magnet is absent.  I usually double check the work but really the kids do it and it happens quickly.
