Question:

How do you plant a tree seed?

My dad has an apricot and a plum tree. Both of the trees had fruit that was way over ripe that I got the pits from. I am wondering how to grow them and when to plant them. Where is the best place to plant them. Are there any special fertilizers? What do I need to do? I have plenty experience with plants, just none with growing trees from seeds.

  1. Stick it in a pot and just keep it moist.  Might not grow till nest spring. Maybe it will need stratifying. Maybe not.  But the winter weather will probably take care of it (unless youre in zone 9 or hotter).

  2. Both the plum and the apricot need to be chilled for a month to get the pit stratified.  Otherwise the seed may never sprout.  The number of chill hours depends on the variety of the trees and varies.

Wrapped the pits in moist paper towels and place the towel in a plastic bag and place that whole thing in the refrigerator.  Plant the pit in the spring when soil is tillable.

  3. tI'd recommend following the directions for the tree planting but to use a plan pot inside.  They will grow but they may turn out to be seeds of the graft and not able to grow on their own.  I'd baby them inside before transferring them outside because they may be eaten by that darn rabbit.
