The balls are racked similiar to the 8 ball rack. The balls are played in numerical order with the 10 ball being in the middle of the rack which would be similiar in the 8 ball rack and the 1 ball being the head ball. the 10 ball is the winning ball. Some rules however do not allow you to play 10 ball with 9 ball rules such as: all balls that are scratched are spotted back up on the spot, there is no ball in hand, scratches-the cue ball is shot behind the foul line at the head of the table. Some people who gamble will even say that the 10 ball must be shot last and allow a pay out on the 5 ball. Just ask whoever you are playing what rules are in place BEFORE you start the game. This will always help eliminate most confusion later on!! :)
