  1. It is simple to play.  You pick the winner of 3 or 4 consecutive races.  You walk up to the teller and say The track name, One dollar pick three starting with race 1. Then say the horse numbers, 3 (race 1)with 3(race 2) with 3 (race 3)(The 3 representing, the horse numbers). If you want to pick more then one horse each race you say "Starting with Race 1.. 2,3,4 WITH 2,3 WITH 2,3 (Numbers representing horse numbers). When you pick mulitple horses the ticket will cost alot more; to figure out the cost, you multiply the number of each horses in each race. So in the second example your ticket would cost $18 (3x2x2).

Saying "with" moves it on to the next race when you.

    So in real time.

Arlington Park $1 Pick three starting with Race 1

    1,2,3

    With

    2

    With

    123

    = $9 (3x1x3)

Pick four is the exact same way.  Remeber if you pick more then one horse on each race it is going to cost you more then a $1.

    Good Luck

  2. How to play pick 3

    ------------------------

    1. Select one or more 3-digit numbers (e.g, 392, 404, 555)

    2. Mark the numbers on a play slip which you can get from any store that plays lottery.

    3. Select the play types for each selected number. The play types are ''Straight, box, combo, and Straight/Box. (In Illinois they have also Front and back pair play types, but let's  skip them)

    4. Mark the amount you want to spend on each number ($1 or $0.50)

    5. Hand the play slip to the store clerk. He will insert it into the machine and will give you the actual lottery tickets.

That's all to it, however, what makes it confusing is the many choices of play types.   And here is a brief description of each play type:

Straight means that you are betting that the number will come in 'exact order' as you played it. eg., if you played 392 as a straight, and if the winning number is 392, then you'll win $500 for a $1 play. But if the winning number is 239, you dont win anything.

Box play means that you are betting that the number will come in 'any order',. eg., if you played 392 as a box, and if the winning number is 239, then you'll win $80 for a $1 play. Note that even if the winning number is 392 (exactly as you played it) , you will win onlty $80 since you played it as a box.

Now, if you play 404 as a box for $1, and if it wins, the payout is not $80, but $160. This is because one of the digits is repeated.

I gave you 3 examples of numbers at the beginning for a purpose. They are representative of the three types of 3-digit number types. 3-digit numbers can be grouped into 3 types: a) non-repeating digits such as 392, also called 6-way, b) doubles, such as 404, also called 3-way, and c) triples, such as 555.

So, a box play pays more for 3-way than 6-way.

Note that triples cannot be played as a box since any arrangement of the digits results in the same number.

Next is  the straight/box play. This is nothing else but playing a number both as a straight and as a box. It always costs $1 (no $0.50). If you play 392 as straight/box, what you are actualy doing is playing the number for $0.50 as straight and $0.50 as a box. And if the winning number is 392, you'll win $290 ($250 for the straight + $40 for the box). If the winning number is 239, you'll win $40 (only the box part).  Note that a straightbox on the number 404 pays $330 (250+80).

Finally, Combo is nothing but all the possible permutations (digit arrangements) of a number. For the number 392, there are 6 permutations, namely, 239, 293, 329, 392, 923, 932 (this is why it is called 6-way). The permutations of 404 are 044,404,440 (3-way). When you play combo, you are playing all the possible arrangements as straights. A $1 combo play on a non-repeating digit number costs you $6, for doubles, it is $3. If you play combo of the number 392 or 404, you'll win $500 in whatever way the digits are drawn.
