  1. hey. im only 15 but when i was young i used to play alot.well anyway ill go step by step instructions. this is for both players

1.place your deck face down infront of you (pick up 6 cards and lay them flat and face down anywhere near where you are playing, these are called prize cards), face down means the back of the card is face up

    2.draw 5 cards

3.place all basic pokemon cards in a line beside your deck, this is called your bench (it tells you if the pokemon is basic or what it evolves from in the top left hand corner)

    4. place foward one basic pokemon from your bench rite away, this is going to be the pokemon you fight with, if you cannot place any basic pokemon foward into attack you automatically lose, this rule applies for the whole battle

5.if you already have an evolution of a basic pokemon(as it tells you in the top left) place it on top of that basic pokemon

    5. you also have energy cards, on each there are different colours (same as the pokemon cards they work with, red energy card attaches to a fire pokemon), each one of your turns you can attach one energy card to one pokemonon your bench or in the attacking line (your pokemon cannot use there abilities unless they have the required amount and particular energies)

    6. you also have trainer cards which pretty much just benefit you, they are straight foward u can use them whenever u like. there are some cards that say you can remove a damage counter from a pokemon, that means you can add 10 hp back onto your pokemon which has been taken away from an opponent attack(which you will learn more of later)

7.to attack your opponent the pokemon in attack must have the energies required to use the attack desired (each pokemon has 2 moves generally, but not both are always attacks to the opponent), so you attack your opponents pokemon with whichever attack you choose, doing the damage beside the attack to your opponents HP (HP is at the top right of the pokemon card)

8.when the pokemon reaches 0  HP is dies and go to the discard pile, which is just above your deck( this is where all used cards go), then your opponent must bring out another pokemon straight away (and you must do the same if they destroy your pokemon)

    9. you can only attack once per turn

    10. each time you kill one of your opponents pokemon you get to pick one face down prize card and add it to your hand (cards that you cant use in your hand, remain in your hand until you can use them by the way)

11.once you have picked up all 6 of your prize cards you win the game

that is pretty much it but if you have any questions you can just email me and i can gladly answer them for you, hope you son has fun

  3. Hello. I saw your question and it brought back memories of my son and his crazy Pokemon days! Running to Toys R us to pick up the latest packs of cards, hauling him to malls so he could join other Pokemon players...it was crazy but he had so much fun. My son is now 14 and doesn't play anymore, but I asked him and he agreed that the best way to learn is to get the beginner deck with the directions and also try to find someone that knows how to play that he can play with and catch on. It's one of those games you have to just play to learn. It's hard to just teach. It's easier just to "do" if you know what I mean. But if he is serious about learning how to play than let me know. My son said he would write your son down a list of the easy card moves and some of the rules that would at least give him the basics. Let us know the deck your son has and also exactly HOW much he knows already. I hope yall have a great Pokemon journey!
