there are many different variations of pool, 8 ball, 9 ball and straight pool and all come with there own regional rules and often pub rules. So i would suggest checking out where you are going to play and familiarise yourself with their rules.

It depends on the game you are playing, but there are two very popular games played on the standard pool table.  Eight ball features15 balls one being the black eight ball, seven solids and seven stripes.  The object is to sink all of your balls (either solid or stripes) in any of the six pockets before sinking the eight ball.  A player may continue shooting until he misses a ball.  If a shot cannot be made, then it is to the players advantage to "hook" his opponant leaving the cue ball in a spot where a shot is difficult or impossible, thus regaining control of the game.

Nine ball is played with the balls numbered 1 through 9.  The object is to sink each ball in numerical order, sinking the nine ball last.  Each ball is worth one point, the nine is worth two.  In competative pool, players have to reach a certain number of points before their opponant. In tournament play it often goes by games won-like the first to win eleven games, as opposed to recording points.  A player may win the game early if they sink the nineball using the numbered ball they are hitting.  For example if I am shooting the one ball, I can hit the one into the nine and pocket it, winning the game.  Strategy is important in nineball, along with cueball control.  It is a great game to play to practice banking, hooking, and cueball control.

Besides these two games there are other variations that can be found, and many bars have their own house rules. In an unfamiliar place it is a good idea to check what the rules are before play.
