How do you pollenate vegetable plants?

I just started a vegetable garden, and I heard pollinating them is a good idea, but how do I do it?

  1. You don't bees do. Do not spray or add chemicals to your plants while they are blooming.

    Some vegetables self pollinate.  Others require bees and bugs that pollinate.  Some folks I heard use a small painters brush and brush one flower and then another.  Female flowers give out the fruit (like cucumbers and mellons) and male flowers don't.  There is no way to tell which is which, so you would have to brush inside each individual flower very delicately.
