How do you position your fingers correctly on a fret?

Please try to explain clearly.

I'm a beginner and I get confused easily lol.

it depends on the chord or note you're playing... but you hold the guitar so that the body is in your right hand, unless you have a left handed guitar which you prolly dont. and put your finger(s) firmly on the string so it doesnt buzz or mute. make sure to put your fingers between the metal lines on the fretboard, not on them. if you put them directly on the metal lines, it will make them be muted and generally sound bad.
