how do you post codes on a website or profile?

let's say i saw a cool background on a code site and i wanted to paste the code on my profile so other people could grab it and use it, how would i do that?

there are a variety of different ways.

1) Using ascii characters to replace < >

< = < or <

> = > or >

best way, IMO

2) Using a textarea to display code

3) Using <xmp> </xmp> though it's not a popularly used way.
