  1. Same way you would with a mile, it is just a little bit shorter.

  2. Taking David's answer into consideration for conditioning, track workouts and even web site references  - I have a tactics plan to "consider"(everyone is different).

After the hard work and time of conditioning and lots of pace work I was given this formula by my first college coach. ( I ran 3:53 in college):

1st lap - hold back as much as 30 meters off of the leader.

2nd lap - GRADUALLY move up so that at the beginning of the 3rd lap you are fourth or third.

3rd lap you are pressuring (on the shoulder of) who ever is leading.

4rth lap (which, remember, is not a complete lap) is all out, "whatever you are made of", "desperation time", "a good day to die" effort to the finish line!!! Which means you have either destroyed (and demorilized) the leader of have at the least just ran your personal best.

This tactic kind of went against my high school coach (FYI - I ran 4:13 in the mile my senior year) who was more conventional in thinking by believing that pace work meant control and running a smart race regardless of your position at any part of the race...

...but both agreed that the last 2 - 300 meters was up to your own personal will to win. That being said - one more little piece of "personal" advice... if you want to have a good finishing kick - practice by pushing the pace the last couple of minutes on your training runs (off of the track 4 - 7 mile runs) and by having good form while running those last couple of minutes; no flailing of the arms, NO LOOKING BACK, no leaning too much forward or backwards, and running through the finish.

    GOOD LUCK -

I LOVED the 1500 meters and it showed as I was much better at it than the 800 or 3000.

  3. Eat a lot of high protein food, drink a lot of water, and run, run, run, run.  When you have done that, do it again, and again, and again.

  4. 1500m requires a combination of speed and endurance.  A 1500m runners will do some easy medium length runs and speed work in the track.  Typically 200m, 400m, 600m and 800m repeats.  Rather than go into more detail, look at the following training plans.
