I'm going to get myself a kitten next week, and I have no idea how to prepare a litter box. Please give me tips or detailed instructions of you have time. The kitten I'm getting is a Persian one and I'm lucky 'coz he's actually litter trained.

Where in the room or house should I actually place it?

  1. put it in a corner of your house and scoop kitty litter into there covering about 3 inches of the box. Then you dump it frequently.

  2. hello i have two cats and i use cats pride kitty litter because this stuff  u can flush down the toilet its a bit dusty its cheep and u can get it from walmart. also i would suggest getting a kitty litter box with a lid so they can have some privacy when they go to the bathroom. also wash and dry your kitty litter pan before you first use it. make sure the pan is super dry before u put the litter in. put enough to fill the bottom of the pain but put enough so he has enough litter to use. if u live in house i would suggest the basement so u cant smell and see the stuff in an apartment close to the bathroom as possible so if u get the flushable kind like me u can just put it down the toilet and the flushable kind is a dream to have no smelly cat waste anywhere and no bags of cat waste to put in the garbage

  3. Place it in a place far away from people.....Cats like to go to the bathroom in private usually and show it to your cat once and the cat will use it reguarly.

  4. Instead of getting an expensive cat box from Petco, go to Target or Wal-Mart and get a rubbermaid tub (most cat owners perfer 30 quarts) cut out a square and add litter. DO NOT GET "clumping clay" because a kitten is still inexperienced and might indigest it causing some medical bills. And for every one cat, you should have two litter boxes, one upstairs and one downstairs in a room that he/she might be in most or where people might be in most. I do not recommend bed rooms, near kitchens, or near their sleeping area (bed) because most kittens will not pee/poo where they sleep.

There is a cat forum that might also help you with your other problems.

  5. i've had mine in the bathroom, and the laundry room. get something scoopable like fresh-step. good stuff.

  6. It really depends on the age of the kitten.  If it's a really young one, you don't want to "hide" the litterbox somewhere that the kitten can't find it.  For the first few weeks, until he's familiar with your house, and knows how to find his way from room to room.....keep his food, water and litterbox in the SAME room.....about 6 Ft from the food/water.  That way, he won't have to go too far to find his "potty".

After you're sure that he knows his way around the house, put the litterbox in the bathroom (where it's easy to "scoop and dispose").  I have an empty ScoopAway bucket (with plastic bag inside) right next to the litterbox, so that I can clean it whenever I see it's been used.  With the lid on the bucket, and the scoop inside, it's handy, not smelly, and easy to keep track of.

As for the litterbox, itself, a very young kitten can "make do" with a dishpan.  It's easy to get into, and easy to clean.  Don't use "scoopable/clumping" litter at first, though, because little kittens will eat it off their paws, and get sick.  By the time he's about 4 months old, the scoopable is good. Also, some kittens / cats do NOT like covered litterboxes.  So, if you get one of those, and the kitten stops using it, that may be the reason!

    Enjoy your new kitten.............good luck.

  7. Pick a little that you like and isn't going to be messy. I don't recommend tidy cat or soemthing taht clumps. When they kick it around it goes everywhere and it's very messy. Get a pine little which is actually recycled paper. They can move it around and its easy to clean. When they urinate it will get crumpled up. It also holds the smell very well! Put the box where you dont want to see it all of the time but its easy to get to for your new kitty. I also don't suggest putting it where your visitors may be able to see it.

Clean it often to cut down on the smell. Enjoy your kitty!

  8. Ooh that's exciting! Sounds adorable! I think there are alot of different opinions on this, but I'll fill you in on what I do. I have a cat and a kitten, and they're picky about their potty. I have two enclosed litter boxes and an open one. I put about two inches of litter in them, scoop them every day, and once a week I dump all the litter out and wash the litter box out.

  9. i have three cats and their litter box is in the laundry room in the corner.  its simple to prepare.  buy a litter box and lid at target or wallmart or any petstore.  buy some kitty litter and litter box bags. (similar to trash bags) put it in the litter box and fill with litter.  snap on the lid and leave your cat alone for a while!

  10. Just get a litter box, a regular size one shouldn't be too big and dump litter in it, enough so he can dig a bit.  That's basically it.  Don't get clumping litter until you're sure the kitten won't eat it.

To clean it just wash it out with water, spraying it with a hose is pretty easy.  I wouldn't use more than soap to clean it, harsh chemicals can repel the cat or make him sick.  Usually if you can get a good spray going with a hose that will be enough.  You'll probably know when it's time to completely change the litter, just never let it get too dirty.  And try to remove the p**p whenever you notice it.  Some litters are flushable, so that's an easy way to dispose of it (I use Feline Pine, which is flushable and good at reducing odors).

A quiet, somewhat out of the way spot is good.  If you have a big home then more than one litter box would be good.  He's young so it helps to have a potty close by.

It's really pretty easy.  Cats naturally use the bathroom somewhere where they can dig and cover it.  Just setting your kitten in the litter box a few times should be all you have to do to get him to learn where it is. Cats are very smart and very clean.

    Congrats on your new addition!

  11. You can either use a liner (plastic) or not.  (you can buy a box of them at the store)

    I have never used them.

I Use the clumping litter because it holds together better.  sented / non sented.

For one kitten cleaning the box once a day is good.

You can add more litter as it is used up.

About once a month take all the sand out of the box and discard.

wash the pan out with soap and water and even some bleach to kill any bacteria in it.

replace with new sand... and you are good to go.

Since your kitten is young... you can try some other types of litter and see how it works.  such as the wheat...(a friend of mine used the crystals and she said the urin really smells ... so she quit using it )

Some cats are picky about what the texture of the sand feels like so they will go outside the box... so you have to get what the cat likes.

If the cat goes outside the box then clean the area with alcohol.  it kills all the smell of the urin and the cat will not go back to that spot.

    good luck ...
