  1. You would have to graft part of the desired tree onto some stock; that way you are guaranteed the correct fruit tree.

  2. Generally good advice above.

Growing from seed is good fun but as mentioned above... it can take 10 years before you see fruit & the fruit is unlikely to be the same as what it was grown from (genetic variation at play).

You also need to bear in mind that stone fruit need cold conditions to set fruit.

Depending on where you are in the country the trees may grow okay but never produce fruit if it's not cold enough during winter.

Assuming that you are in the right zone then your local plant supplier should be able to order in grafted fruit trees for you. Most of these, if cared for well, will fruit in the first year or two.

If you aren't finding any stone fruit trees at your local garden centres then it may be because you are in the wrong zone (or wrong time of year, most will only stock them in spring).

  3. you cant grow it from the stones, you need the seedsman.

  4. Hopflower is right. Same with apples etc. Their stock is all cloned/cuttings. If you plant a seed you could get anything. By the same token you could end up with a new and much loved variety of fruit.

Curious on the topic myself. But haven't read enough to shed a whole lot more.

  5. You don't need to prepare them just pop them in the ground and they will grow, however it will take at least 5 - 10 years to see any fruit on the tree and because it is grow from seed they are not guaranteed to be exactly the same as the fruit you planted. As another person answered you need to graft a piece of the tree that the fruit came off to get the exact one. Ask at your local nursery even if they don't stock it they might be able to order one in or even give you some advice on where to look. Do you know what the varieties were I may be able to help?
