I was just wondering how you pronounce the word 'uvula' (the dangly bit at the back of the mouth!)

  1. That dangly thing, the uvula (yoo-view-luh) sometimes gets infected and swells and we call that uvulitis (inflammation of the uvula).  It's often painful and can really swell up badly, often from a virus.

We don't know why we have one, as it doesn't do a whole lot in terms of physiology.  It's a funny looking thing, but it's there, so we need an anatomic term for it because it can be the focus of disease, regrettably.

We often use "fancy" sounding words, not so much to sound important, rather, we do this to be precise when talking to others.  If we were simply to say that dangly thing in the back of the mouth, this may be ambiguous to another practitioner, that's why we all tend to use highly specific terms in the medical lexicon.

  2. yoo-vyoo-luh

  4. You-view-lah

  5. The uvula (pronounced /ˈjuːvjələ/)

  6. Yew-view-la.

  7. you-view-lah.

Single consonants, so preceeding vowels long.

  8. uvula-(u'-vu-lah) [Latin. uva = grape] The central, tag-like structure hanging down from the free edge of the soft palate.)
