How do you pronounce Beijing?

Is it more Bei-jing or a softer Beijzing? I've heard both ways. It's kind of hard to type the pronunciation, but I think you know what I'm trying to say.

  1. Bay-jing

  2. ba-zhing

  3. It's the softer of the two.

  4. There was an article on yahoo about that and the Chinese have been getting quite angry at Americans mispronouncing it as Beijzing...

Here's the article. I don't even know HOW people thought that Beijzing (which isn't even a sound in English) was the correct pronunciation.

    Here's an excerpt.

NEW YORK (AP)—In the shadow of Olympic venues, Brian Williams has anchored NBC’s “Nightly News” this week in a city he calls Bay-jing.

Yet Bob Costas, Meredith Vieira and many of NBC’s sports announcers seem to be working in a different, more exotic place: Bay-zhing.

    So which is it?

Williams is right, if you talk to experts in the Chinese language. He’s even recorded something about the pronunciation puzzle for NBC’s Web site, although it doesn’t seem to be required viewing for everyone at the network.

“It’s been annoying me for quite awhile, honestly,” said S. Robert Ramsey, a college professor and author of “The Language of China.”
