It's Uh-pitt-uh-mee, isn't it? My English teacher pronounced it Epp-ih-tome, and I thought that was kind of odd. I didn't want to say anything because I thought he might dock me points or something. (He's weird like that)

  1. Yes, you are right, and your teacher is wrong.  I hope this is just a rare stumbling block for him and not indicative of his level of education and vocabulary!

  2. Score one for Mr. Kennedy! I had an English teacher in the 7th grade who mispronounced words all the time. Even then I couldn't understand how she got through college without someone correcting her.

  3. You are correct.

  4. At first I thought I would agree with you and not your teacher

but when I looked it up I do not agree with either one of you.

    According to dictionary.com  and merriam-webster.com

    it is pronounced

    i ˈ- PIT - əmi

with the first and lest letters pronounced as the "i" in the word ink

and the stress is on the PIT

  5. your teacher is correct
