Question:

How do you pronounce "El Bulli" (Ferran Adria's restaurant near Barcelona)?

Is it pronounced as if in Spanish, with the "ll" being pronounced like a "y"? Or is it different in Catalan - for example, is the "ll" simply pronounced like an "l"?

Does everybody in Spain pronounce the name of the restaurant the same way, or do the Catalan speakers get it right and the non-Catalan speakers get it wrong?

  1. Bu-yee or bu-jee, as you want. Not like an l.

If it's in catalan, they pronounce it in catalan. If it's in spanish, it's pronounced in spanish. And if it's in chinese (many chinese shops) the chinese guys pronounce it in chinese better than us, I guess.   :)

  2. Catalan people like myself pronounce it like "y"...some Spanish people pronounce it like "l" sometimes....non-Catalan speakers get it wrong!!!!!

Just a tip: think of other words with "ll" and how you should pronounce it, for example: llave (key), llover (rain) etc etc....by the way in Spanish "ll" and "y" are pronounced differently!!!!

Someone said "ll" does not exist in Catalan and they're WRONG!! of course it does exist: think fo the Catalan city: Lleida, the male name: Lluis, llum (light) and plenty of other more.

  3. I would pronounce it:

    EL BUYI

  4. EHL  BOOYEE

  5. The fact that it is spelt with 'll' means it is Spanish.  If it were Catalan, it wouldn't be spelt like that.

'll' doesn't exist in written Catalan.

    Hope this helped.

    I stand corrected. Disculpa!

  6. I think it would make more sense if pronounced like "L"

  7. El Bulli is pronounced with the Y you would use in YES, so phonetically would sound  L BU-YEE   (or L BU-JEE). I hope that, if you are as rich as to pay for it, and as lucky as to get to eat there, you will enjoy it and let us (poor sad people) know how did it go. El Bulli experience is something I have been wanted to do for sooooo many years. I am not luxury-like person, but in this case, I really would love to eat there. I don't think is so much the idea of eating in a restaurant, but, as I mentioned, experience food as they do it.

  8. Having spent lots of time in Barcelona I believe they would pronounce that like:

    El Bu-yee
