As a bit of trivia, the name combine was a shortening of "combined harvester".  In the good old days, small grain crops were shocked (cut and bundled) and then transported to a stationary threshing machine run by a steam engine in the early days before gasoline power became common.  The combine cuts and threshes the grain all in one operation, hence the name "combined harvester".
