I found this word "kyepka" in a book about TaeKwon Do ...

I am doing an audiobook and need to pronounce it somewhat properly. I can't find it anywhere online. My American Korean friend says she thinks it's supposed to be "kyokpa" or "kyukpa" and that it's a typo. It's my understanding that it's a break move in Tae Kwon Do. The author uses it many times so I need to pronounce it correctly. Thanks,

  1. Your book has the wrong transilation. Unfortunately it happens too often and make the translation really hard (especially for taekwon-do since they use military or uncommon terminologies)

I don't know if you train in ITF Taekwon-do but I do and inside the Encyclopedia there are a lot of mistakes. That's weird since it has been done by Korean people.

Anyways the real way to say it is like your American Korean friend told you:

    Kyokpa (격파)

It means crush, smash up, defeat, beat off :)

    Now how to pronounce it...

kyŏk p'a (the kyŏ is like kyoto - but the ŏ must be short as in fault) make sure you pronounce the k at the end of the syllable. The p' has an aspiration sound after the p as in the word pop. And "a" sounds like "a" in cat

In any cases I believe that your korean friend make a better job than me as to how to pronounce it.
