  1. Watch how your leg makes contact with their leg. That means choose the appropriate kick for your target. If you want to kick someone in the shin or knee, you should use the bottom part of your foot (like a stomp). If you want to kick someone in the thigh, you can use your shin.

When executing a kick, if the target is a shin or a knee, you want to make a forward stomping motion (like kicking down a door) When using your shin, have the power behind it come from your hips and abs. This won't really make you less likely to injure yourself, but it's more effective than throwing with your thigh/butt.

Also, practice! The more you practice throwing an effective, properly thrown kick, the better you'll be at it and you're more likely to throw it without getting hurt. If you have access to a heavy bag, thats a great resource.

  2. When you first start learning to kick and are not used to it, kicking will hurt.  Once you strengthen up your shins, it won't hurt anymore.  It is similar to taking a kick to the leg.  Once you are used to it, you don't feel it so much.

  3. if you want to know this for self-defence, in an everyday situation, then stamp down just above their knee. this should smash it. :o

As for technique in a dojo, i learn aikido (which does not use kicking / punching) so i cant help you. :(

  4. Don't use your toes, use your instep or shin, go for the theigh or back of their knee.

Or just go for the face (like me)

  5. oh dont kik them in the leg silly! that will just hurt you as well. kik them in the balls!

  6. You kick bags(80-100lbs) for a long time then you can't feel your shins hurt as much

  7. I am going to let you in on a little secret...are you ready...the shin and instep are not the only parts you can hit with on a round kick...what you say..I never see that in the UFC...how is that possible....because many people that have answered your question have never actually trained. The fact is that a round kick can also use the ball of the foot. While it takes more skill to target this kind of kick, you will get twice the penetration as you do with the shin.

The correct answer is a combination of things.

    1) Proper technique- Beleive it or not if you kick correctly it will definetly help minimize the damage done to yourself.

    2) Condition- As you make contact you will develope hairline fractures if you are using the shin, and yoru body is constantly replacing bone, this is how breaks can heal. The cool thing is that the bone that replaces or is repaired will be stronger then it was. It is part of the bodies healing mechanisms.

  8. you actually don't

no matter what you will end up injuring yourself because your shins aren't ready for the abuse

after toughening them up and learning proper technique you wont feel anything

doing one of the two before really kicking someone helps but not 100%

i had learned proper technique and got into a kickboxing match

took off the shin pads and had blood blisters and bruises up and down my leg

i even cut open my foot landing a high kick he blocked with his elbow

  9. Use your shin and kick at their knee. Snaps like a twig.
